Gene Simmons. Player!
With the gorgeous and generous Madeleine Stowe
I just saw a tweet from Mending Kids International thanking me for all I do. Yes. Sitting next to Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr at dinner. Then watching my husband beat Mel Gibson, Gene Simmons and Jodie Foster at poker was such a sacrifice. I mean I did have to put on a pretty dress when it was raining out. But I’d watch stars play poker to save a kids life any night.
I call it strip poker cause celebs were stripped of their cash before poker. During dinner Sean Penn (sporting a ponytail) got up and said you know this isn’t even my charity but I like this group. And he added why not give before you lose your tax deduction. Sean made a huge donation. He paid for a medical mission to Haiti. Gene Simmons doubled it. Mel matched that. Madeleine Stowe paid for a mission. And she brought the entire cast of Revenge to the event. They were all bidding against each other to pay for missions and go on trips. Garry Shandling said he’d give even more if he didn’t have to go anywhere.
And that was all before poker.
My husband sat at a table with Gene Simmons and beat him. When Gene got up I said “Gene are you leaving?” He said “eventually all men do”. Gene left. Leaving 5 guys. It was supposed to go till 11pm. At midnight it was my husband, the cute guy from Revenge (actually they are all cute) Josh Bowman (with his girlfriend/co-star Emily Vancamp watching.) And two others.
Around 1am it came down to two. I think my husband knows when to hold ‘em but he did not feel like holding it any more. I swear he let the other guy win just because he wanted to pee. Fun evening and after all that silliness…we will save so many kids.
Mending Kids now has funding for some of our missions. I’m going on the next trip to Ethiopia. I feel so blessed to get to play with the kids and watch the doctors save lives. And my all important job making sure the doctors have M&Ms and toilet paper. See? The things I do for charity…
