The coffee at the hospital isn’t bad. It’s terrible. I kid because…I have time to kill. I’m waiting for my kid, my Mending Kid. She’s in surgery again. I’m too fidgety (due to the before mentioned coffee) to read, so I will write.
The last time Sandra was here it was all tears and vomit. This time the nurses braided her hair, gave her some nice meds (hey what about me?). It was more Four Seasons than Shriners. She seemed relaxed going to surgery. Her host Mommy (that would be me) would be a different story.
By the way…I will break into my blog the moment her surgery is done.
In case you don’t know Sandra’s story (please skip this if you have already heard me go on and on about her). She is from El Salvador. Brought here by a charity called Mending Kids International (mendingkids.org). This is her second surgery. The Doctors are taking her hand (which was one piece of flesh) and making fingers. She adores her new pinkie and with this surgery she will have a middle finger (which she will hopefully never use in an inappropriate way). She has a loving family back home. She lives with us while she is here for surgery. I am what we call her “host” Mom.
But now that we have discussed the serious stuff lets move on to Steve. He has achieved so much in his lifetime and so deserves an award. I would like to have been there but I was not expecting an invite (I might make someone’s eyes bleed). I am proud of him and told him so (texting counts as talking…right?)
From two trips to Africa and now two trips to Shriners Hospital with Sandra I have learned (OK …this part is BS. I still haven’t learned this. But do as I say…not as I do) Do not sweat the small shit. Or the small shits (people who bug you).
This just in…
The brilliant (& beautiful) surgeon Dr Katherine Au just told me all went well. Sandra has a pink cast (perfect accessory) and is sleeping peacefully (no vomit!)
One more update. She’s up! And when you are eating and peeing ( which I have been doing all day but I guess it’s more about her) they let you go home. But (perhaps one more update than you need) we have vomit. So I’m going to have some bad coffee. Could be a long night.
I think you are such a special and compassionate person for helping Sandra with her reconstructive surgeries, especially that she is so far away from her family. She seems to have really bonded with you and your family. You are providing a great example for people to follow .
Dorothy!! You are a saint! You are what Sandra needs! So grateful! I’m sorry you and Jill weren ‘t invited to Steve’s award ceremony! Not fair! That’s Fox for ya I guess! Miss you!!!! Xo
Dorothy,
I wish I could have been at the hospital with you, bad coffee and all. I have such a soft spot in my heart for all children, and what you’re doing as a host mom is wonderful, I would do it in a heartbeat if we had a quality hospital in our area that did pro bono surgeries. To the point of caring about people who don’t care about you. It’s a tough lesson, but we’re too old to give a damn. No person is universally loved or even respected. Your quality shines through in your actions, give up on caring about those who you feel have done you wrong. I’ve had to learn this lesson again and again, but I think I’ve earned my PhD in not caring what others think about me. My family loves me, my friends love me, and if there is a god I hope she loves me, and I love me. And I love you. Just wish we could reconnect geographically, I would love to be in your daily friend orbit again. Peace.
Leaving your job was the best thing ! You have so much to offer the world. Glad Sandra is doing well . Happy to here a positive comment re: Steve . You know he would have loved you there, enough said! Class act Dorothy Take care
Writing is your thing BFF.
Such a blessing! I love the updates on Sandra and your funny sense of humor! Also very gracious of you to move onward and upward and not complain about the award! I think you are classy and a good example of a Christian believer! God bless you and your loved ones!
Dorothy, you are the best! Sandra is very lucky to have you as a host mother. I agree, someone said it was good you left the show because you have so much more to do with yourself. Although I miss the show, (I don’t watch it, it’s just not the same, and the new girls can never fill your shoes and Jillian’s) I think you have the more worthy things to do, help children and that just shows the kind of person you are. Kind, caring, loving and just great all around! Best wishes to Sandra.
I am so happy Sandra is with her host mom again for this second go round. I can only imagine how she is going to feel to have fingers. like every other child. God Bless you Dorothy.
As far as Steve goes, We are all proud of him and a lot of us have no clue what so ever why you weren’t invited but being the classy lady you are, just ignore it. ((((Dorothy))))……Steve loves you and would have had you there if he would have had the choice.
PS: Tell Sandra I said hi and I wish I could send her a card or something.
Hugs to you both
When you open your heart to a child, you receive so much more back. You are Sandra’s angel. You are a blessing, Dorothy!!
Hey Dorothy,
Fox has hired some very unintelligent people so it seems! They didn’t know what a good thing they had…I am sure that they are finding it out now. I, along with many others, no longer watch the 11 morning news. The new cast, little that I saw of them were, awful! No appeal at all.
Thank goodness for kind and generous people like you to take that little girl in and help her to have a more complete and normal life!!
I did tune in to see what Steve had to say about you and Jillian being snubbed. If I could read his body movements along with his tone of voice and choice of words, I believe that he did not have a choice in the matter who would be included in his celebration. I believe that it was the new idiots running the station that ran the show!!
Hope to see you, Jean, and Jillian, sometime in your new adventures. Until then take care, and know that many miss you!
Ann
I left Los Angeles in Feb 2010. I was floored to learn that the Good Day L.A crew I watched (and loved) for years no longer existed.. but so happy to see and follow all of the wonderful things you are doing here Dorothy:)
hey dorthy. ive never followed anyones twitter but felt compelled to tell you that i think your a classy women with a heart of gold. i watched you on gdla for 12 years after you left i tried to watch for a minute it wasnt the same. i had no idea what you 3 people meant to me. i actually cried…what a boob huh? i wish you well and hope that this time with david and nash is what will keep you inspired. the work you do with mending kids is wonderful…
thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts
tina
dorthy i really am glad that you are doing great things now that you are no longer with gdla, steve just recieved an award, i forget what it was but he did say he wished that you and jillian were there, props to steve for saying that..it is sad when any network, or company lets go of good people for reasons that don’t make sense, its all about the money, you make to much and they will replace you with cheaper labor, you and jillian and jean were the victims of tlhe cuts on gdla, YOU WILL succeed beyond what gdla would have .
