So I saw Steve. Yes, that Steve. I haven’t seen Steve since I was liberated (doesn’t that sound better?) from Fox. The silver haired Fox seems fine. Only saw him for a moment. It’s been more than two years, and we spoke for less than 2 minutes. But we did look back a bit. And we did laugh a bit. Recently I read a quote that said — You’re on the right track when you become uninterested in looking back.
But please allow me to look back for a moment, because I saw Steve at a funeral for a friend.
A man we worked with years ago. A man we adored. A man so filled with joy. A man who went to a Catholic Mass every day, even though he was gay.
The next day I almost saw Jill. We both went to opening night at the Hollywood Bowl. I couldn’t find her in the crowd. I did find the legend that is Nigel Lythgoe. That Cheeky Brit.
Kristin Chenoweth was being honored. Never has someone so little been so big. She’s quite popular ( it’s all about popular) but a gay friend turned to me and said ” No one is this gay.”
They also honored the Go Go’s. The girls still rock. And with all the rock cocaine they’ve done… I’m glad they’re alive.
This probably counts as looking back… but I was lucky to interview that cute Kristin Chenoweth & Belinda Carlisle and pretty much everyone else you can name while I worked with Steve & Jill.
And it was a great Mom job. I got to show up for every field trip. Showed up in inappropriate short skirts and too much make up. But I made it.
One day I knew I wouldn’t make the school Christmas pageant. And I couldn’t get the day off. So I did something I never ever did (ok once or oh hell… maybe twice). I called in sick. I went to the Christmas show and happened to sit with another Mom, Jane Seymour. We laughed & cried & said goodbye. Who shows up on the show the next day… Jane. She sits on the set and says ”weren’t the kids adorable yesterday?” Hark… the herald angels were singing. I came clean. I thought it made for a holly jolly Christmas story. But I got such shit. The Grinch in management was not amused. I almost got suspended over it.
Now that child is driving. Now that he has his license I hope he stops by occasionally to say hi. Actually he has to. He doesn’t have a car. He often has my car. Our conversations these days are…Dude where’s my car?
So watch out on the road for that little embryo you watched growing up. And he is grown up.
I don’t know if I can say I’m completely uninterested in looking back.
But when I look back…I laugh.

I lost a business to a hostel takeover around the same time you were liberated. I stayed in bed for a month. The last year has been so difficult. The pain, the guilt, the failure. The people you thought were were your friends. So I very much relate to your blog story, Sometimes looking back is so painful. I hope someday I will just be able to look back with joy.
The Bible says count it all joy. I know…crazy. But we can try.
I enjoy your writing. Funny and witty.
What made you such a hit on the show was you were never afraid to display your humanness, faults and all. Here you display your humility, to show that a chapter in your life still so deeply touches you. Like so many others, I wish it hadn’t ended as it did, but a new chapter has begun for you and I’ve been wanting to thank you for sharing with all of us who still, and always will, love and miss you.
Thanks for such a sweet & thoughtful comment.
Faults? What faults??
Xo
Nice to hear from You again…..you are doing great. You are right, no point in looking back too much, look forward to the future. Gods Blessings to you and your family
Awe Dorothy……….you made me get a few tears in my eyes. I loved the exchange & charisma you all had.
It was the very best of times! Great TV! We were all so fortunate to enjoy you guys and you’re right, you have to enjoy these moments when they’re happening………………I haven’t watched any GDLA since.
I am happy you ran into Steve and he’s doing well. My husband & I always thought he was a good man.
I would have loved to have seen a pic of you & Jill (for old times sake).
Its also hard to believe that your Nash is driving………WOW! Man, time flies!
Keep up your posts, I love hearing from you:-)
I love your post, and I really enjoyed watching GDLA when you and Jill were on it. In fact, I stopped watching it when you all were “liberated” as you said. Wishing you happiness and joy. I will look forward to reading more of your posts. Cheers!

LOVE this so much. I actually decided I wanted to study communications in school because of watching y’all on Good Day LA…even though I live in Mississippi. That’s a story for another comment. Happy you’re doing well!
