Rodrigo has two Moms.
Actually three.
When you count his real mommy.
But here…
He has me.
And Hot Mother Teresa.
That’s what I call my friend Brooke.
Sometimes I call her my partner.
Just to mess with people.
Hot mama and I both wanted Rodrigo.
So we’re co-parenting.
She does the hard parts.
I’m the Disneyland Dad kind of Mom.
Brooke took him to surgery.
I give him candy.
You know me.
And that saving the world one lollipop at a time thing.
I brought Rodrigo back with me from a mission trip to El Salvador.
He was born with one ear.
Paul Stanley from Kiss was born with one ear.
Paul was bullied as a kid.
And somehow became a rock star.
Rodrigo has been playing air guitar since he met Paul.
Paul came to the hospital to hang out with Rodrigo and other Mending Kids having the same surgery.
It can take 7 surgeries to give a kid an ear.
Dr John Reinisch of Cedars does it in one.
One surgery.
Suddenly…
Two ears.
The ear is an implant (think boob).
But your skin covers it.
They take the skin from the groin…
TMI?
OK.
Lets just say he’s recovering nicely.
At my house he’s got my son, the dog, cat and turtle.
At hot mama’s he got 3 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats and (yes) a pig.
That mini pig almost made me give up bacon.
I call it Kevin Bacon.
But even with this Malibu petting zoo…
Rodrigo said he needed to see a penguin and a giraffe.
We don’t have those.
So we planned a trip to the Zoo.
All the way up to Santa Barbara he was asking a question.
We weren’t sure what he was saying.
Sometimes he’s hard to understand.
Plus our Spanish sucks.
We phoned a friend who’s fluent.
His question…
Are we there yet?
My last Mending Kid Sandra once begged me for salchicha.
I had to phone a friend.
Who said…
Please give the kid a hot dog.
The moms are blonde.
But eventually we get it.
And eventually we got there.
We proudly pointed out a penguin.
He was like…
OK.
We pointed out a nine-day old giraffe.
OK.
We practically forced him to feed the giraffe.
They charge a dollar for each piece of lettuce.
We stuffed that giraffe till we both got a photo.
He’s so over the two Moms taking photos.
He’s such a boy.
A 9-year-old boy.
We just celebrated his birthday.
I brought an 8-year-old with one ear here from El Salvador.
We’re sending home a 9-year-old with 2 ears.
And 2 extra Moms who will love him forever…
is the turtle a desert tortoise or a water turtle? would love a pic…thanks dorothy
My BFF – like you had that surgery when she lost her ear from melanoma.. it was developed in a VA hospital for veterans – i think Perry Point VA- see they do great things even if FOX news doesn’t say they do LOL .. YOU ARE AMAZING SO IS Brooke ..Love u guys

I was having lunch @TheGroveLA La Piazza last week. Looked over and saw this most adorable, best behaved little boy. Recognized him from your posts. Brought tears to my eyes and thought of how wonderful you and all the Mending Kids volunteers, wonderful doctors also that give so much time and loving care to these children in need. Wanted to say “Hi” but didn’t want to infringe on his time. I do speak some Spanish. God Bless you Dorothy!! Miss you On GDLA. Not the same, and really don’t watch it anymore.
