I had to pee.
But there’s no potty in the Amazon.
Not the Amazon you order books from.
Well…
I order beauty stuff.
Occasionally herbal diet pills.
I like the green tea pills.
This is the other Amazon.
The one with the monkeys. spiders and snakes.
We took a canoe through the Amazon jungle.
Our guide picked berries off a tree and gave them to me.
I ate them.
That alone could cause diarrhea.
But the bigger problem was coffee.
Fifteen of us set out for a sunrise jungle tour.
I had coffee.
Dumb Mommy.
I had my son.
And 4 other teenage boys.
Crazy Mommy.
The guide said don’t rock the boat.
Because of the monkeys, spiders & snakes.
But between me having to pee.
And the kids.
That canoe was rocking.
We stopped to see a tree house.
Very Swiss Family Robinson in the Amazon.
We climbed up.
I sort of found a potty.
Actually a branch to pee on.
One of the doctors told me she needed to pee.
I said…
I did.
At the tree house.
She said…
There was a bathroom there?
I said…
No.
Not really.
The adventure in the Amazon came after a week of surgeries.
A surgeon, an anesthesiologist, a pediatrician, the nicest nurses ever and a bunch of boy volunteers went on a medical mission trip to Peru.
It took 3 planes and a 3 hour bus ride to get there.
When we got there 50 kids were waiting.
Dr Dean Anselmo did 45 surgeries.
What he does is a miracle.
Another miracle…
The hospital had toilet paper.
Usually it’s BYOTP.
Another miracle…
The boys were helpful.
They set up the free clinic.
Taking a photo of each kid.
Taking the medical intake.
My Spanish sucks.
But I loved hearing my son speak fluently to everybody.
I got busy setting up a nail salon.
Doing blue nail polish on the girls.
Playing Twister & Jenga with the boys.
I’m not saving lives.
But it does feed my soul.
Two sisters needed surgery.
Their last name is Gil.
The nurses named them the Gilmore Girls.
I gave the Gilmore Girls Barbies I got in Target before we left.
These kids are stoic.
They live a hard life.
It’s nice to see a smile after surgery.
I’ve been on 6 surgical mission with Mending Kids.
This was one of my favorites.
Not just because I got to bring my son.
Not just because one of the nurses thought I was too young to have a son that old.
Not just because I lost a few pounds.
But because we got to hug and love these kids.
We got to see their lives changed.
We got to see a rainbow after our last surgery.
When we stopped to take photos…
We were stopped by men with machetes asking for a “donation” to let us use the road.
All that…
And I got to pee on a tree house…

I think I’m gonna jump on your ‘bullet proof protein’ train… Better to launch a preemptive strike against the turkey neck, while I’m still a young chick. …that’s a lie… I’m more of a hen at this point. Do you do the whole bulletproof coffee ‘thing’? Coconut oil, protein, etc…? (Gosh, I sound so vain!!) The real reason I’m commenting is to tell you, your blogs always make me laugh, and cry…. And you are funny, humble, and amazing. It’s a good combo. Keep on keepin’ on….
I think what you are doing with your life is Wonderful!!!! If I could I would go with you on every trip!!! You are such a blessing to so many and I love that you brought your son!!!! Keep up the great work Dorothy!! If you need a helping hand please let me know.
